2008 Young Printmaker Award

CWAJ established the Young Printmaker Award to encourage the development of young artists. The recipient of this annual award is selected on the criteria of a project proposal, artistic potential and creativity, and is awarded 500,000 yen to be used for a specific project within one year. This year the recipient is Ms. Miku Ishizaki.

Ishizaki at work

Ms Ishizaki, graduate student at Tokyo Zokei University, will use her award for a two-tiered project. The first stage of her project relates to improving her skill as an artist making prints on handmade Japanese paper (washi). To do so, she will buy equipment for straining washi at home or at school and also, study and do research in Japanese paper-making regions, such as Tosa and Mino. Applying what she learned from this study, Ms Ishizaki then plans to hold an exhibition in Spring 2009, which she believes will be an invaluable experience for expanding her future as an artist. CWAJ members will have the opportunity to meet Ms Ishizaki in person at the October Luncheon and Print Show Opening Night.
