Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara may be the busiest 98-year-old in the world. His schedule book is full until 2014, with lectures and hospital work. He has published over 200 books, covering a spectrum of topics, from medicine, essays, poems, picture books for children, to Christianity. “Living Long, Living Good” sold over 1.2 million copies in 2001, making him the oldest best-selling author in Japan. If you want to think about how to plan your life, he would be an excellent advisor. Dr. Hinohara has continuously upgraded Japanese medical care from the viewpoint of the quality of life of the patient. He understands the mind of patients, who suffer from serious illness, as he experienced it himself. He has promoted the system of medical education and nursing education, and also preventive medicine, and hospice care. St. Luke’s International Hospital is now recognized as a first-class hospital with 520 beds, all of which are single. St.Luke’s College of Nursing is now one of Japan’s top institutions. In 1996, he influenced the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare to switch from using the word “adult disease” to “lifestyle-related disease”. One of his favorite pastimes is composing music, and he works tirelessly as Chairman of the Japanese Music Therapy Association, one of many positions he holds. |
