February Luncheon Program

The History of the Blues

Steve Gardner – Mississippi Bluesman

So Ladies - A Quick Quiz! Get out your pencils and see if you can answer these three questions.
  1. How do you make a musical instrument from a couple of nails and a long piece of wire?
  2. How does the sound of music created by people who live in a wide, open area differ from people who live in a wooded, secluded area?
  3. What moment in American history set the stage for the predominant use of brass instruments in Jazz music?
To check your answers and learn a whole lot more, come on down to the Tokyo American Club for an exciting luncheon on The History of the Blues with Mississippi Bluesman Steve Gardner.

Graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in Journalism, Steve came to Japan in 1980 as a photojournalist. His photographs have been published in TIME and Newsweek as well as in numerous Japanese and European magazines. In 1994 he published his critically acclaimed book of photographs on the American South and the Blues, RAMBLING MIND. His work has been exhibited and sponsored in Japan by Nikon, Kodak, Parco, Hohner Harmonicas, Shimokura Music and the FCCJ. In 2007 he was inducted into the University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Mass Communication Hall of Fame.

As a musician Steve has played with Blues greats Sam Chatmon, Booby Barnes, Jessie Mae Hemphill, and Jack Owens to name a few. He has released 3 CD’s to date. His most recent CD - Walking the Dog – was chosen as one of the 10 best CDs of 2009 by WWOZ Radio in New Orleans. In Tokyo he plays regularly around town and has done TV and radio spots for numerous clients including Wild Turkey Whiskey, Coca Cola and Gibson Guitars. In the daytime he teaches at Meiji University and regularly guest lectures at universities around Japan on the History and Roots of American Blues Music. So come on out for an exciting multi-media event, some great “foot stomping” music, a fascinating history lesson and stunning photographs. Come on down y’all – let’s have a great time!
