MONTHLY LUNCHEON

April Luncheon Program

Constantin von Brandenstein

My great-great-grandfather,

Dr. Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866)

Siebold1 In April we are extremely privileged    to  have as our guest speaker, Constantin von Brandenstein , who will speak to us about the life of his great-great-grandfather, Dr. Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866) well known to the Japanese as Shiboruto-sensei.
On a monument in Nagasaki it is written: "Siebold is seen in the West as the scientific discoverer of Japan. He realized the best sides of our country and its people and communicated this to all the nations."

In the early 19th century when Japan was still closed to the outside world, Siebold worked for the Dutch community at Deshima Nagasaki as a medical doctor (1823-1829).

During his stay, he collected as much information as possible about Japan. His books, published on his return to Europe, comprise the most comprehensive description of Japan ever written– including extensive cataloguing of its flora and fauna. In addition, items from his vast ethnographical collection, ranging from daily objects to woodblock prints, are regarded as valuable treasures in European museums.
Siebold also educated Japanese students in Western natural sciences aiming at initiating multicultural exchange.

Later his students played an important role in the process of opening and modernizing Japan. His own daughter, O-ine, became the first Western-educated female physician in Japan, enjoying a long and well-respected career.

Mr. von Brandenstein, who will be visiting Japan from Germany, holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from Frankfurt/Main/Germany and currently works as a financial adviser in addition to managing his family’s forestry estates in Germany. He is President of the Siebold Association in Wuerzburg and Honorary Director of the Siebold Memorial Museum in Nagasaki. In addition he is a member of the Order of Malta and the President of Malteser Hilfsdienst – a charitable NGO with over a million members.
Please come join us for a very special lunch!
