GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP FOR JAPANESE WOMEN
TO STUDY ABROAD (SA)
2013

2 Scholarships, ¥3 Million

 

The SA Program supports graduate study at English-speaking universities and research institutions abroad for women who are citizens or special permanent residents of Japan. CWAJ proudly encourages qualified applicants of any age or circumstances to apply and does not impose restriction on field of study.
   
Eligibility Requirements
1. Applicants must be women who are citizens or special permanent residents of Japan, living in Japan from the time of application until March 31, 2013.

Individuals currently studying or living abroad are ineligible.  We therefore regret that we are unable to accept any applications from outside Japan.
   
2. Applicants must have graduated with a degree from a Japanese university (4 year course) by March 31, 2013.
   
3. Applicants must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score from a test taken after October 1, 2010. Scores submitted separately from or after the application will not be accepted.

TOEFL
Applicants pursuing a graduate degree in the natural sciences, math, medicine or engineering must have a score of at least 570 (CBT 230, IBT 88).

Applicants pursuing a degree in any other field must have a score of at least 600 (CBT 250, IBT 98).

IELTS
Applicants pursuing a graduate degree in the natural sciences, math, medicine or engineering must have a score of at least 6.5.

Applicants pursuing a degree in any other field must have a score of at least 7.0.
   
4. Applicants must be accepted in a graduate degree program at an accredited, English speaking university or research institution abroad by March 31, 2013 for the 2013-2014 academic year and start within the year 2013.
   
5. Applicants who have studied abroad at the college level in an English-speaking institution for more than a total of two (2) academic years are ineligible.
   
6. Holders of scholarships greater than ¥1.5 million from other scholarship programs (kigyo ryugaku) are ineligible. Financial aid and awards from the university where the applicant will study may not be subject to the same limitation.
   
7. Former recipients of CWAJ awards and CWAJ members are ineligible.
   
Obtaining the Application
  Application forms are available ONLY from the CWAJ website. The forms are in PDF format. You need Acrobat Reader 5 to read and print the downloaded forms. If you do not have the reader installed on your computer, you can download it free of charge by clicking here.
   
  * Note that if your Acrobat reader is an earlier version, for example Acrobat Reader 4, you may not be able to read the applications correctly.

Submitting the Application
   
All applications must be written in English.
   
The Application Package
1. Include your application forms and the other required documents. Write “SA Application” on the envelope and send it by post. Do not send by yubin kakitome (registered mail) or takuhaibin as these will NOT be accepted.
   
2. Incomplete applications or applications submitted without the required number of copies will not be considered.
   
Please also note the following:
1. Please do not send extra documents such as publications. The scholarship committee will consider only the documents we request.
   
2. We do not accept applications via e-mail.
 
3. No documents will be returned.
   
PERIOD OF ACCEPTANCE:
  Applications must be postmarked or received during the following period:
Friday, October 26 through Tuesday, November 6, 2012.

Interviews and Selection
  Interviews of the finalists will be held during late January or early February in Tokyo. Interviews are usually conducted on weekends. You will be notified at least two weeks in advance if you have been selected for an interview. The interview will be conducted in English. Applicants will be notified of the results in writing.
   
  CWAJ reserves the right to make its own selections and does not discuss its decisions.
