Eligibility Requirements

  1. Applicants must be women who are nationals or permanent residents of Japan, living in Japan from the time of application until the end of March 2008. Individuals currently studying or living abroad are ineligible.

All CWAJ scholarship applicants are required to be living in
Japan at the time of their application. We regret, therefore, that we are unable to accept any inquiries from outside Japan.

  2. Applicants must have graduated with a degree from a Japanese university (4 year course) by the end of March 2008.

  3. Applicants must submit a TOEFL score of at least 570 (CBT 230, IBT 88) if applying for a graduate degree in the natural sciences, math, medicine or engineering, and 600 (CBT 250, IBT 100) if applying for a degree in any other field. The TOEFL must have been taken after March 31, 2006.  Instead of a TOEFL score, applicants may submit an IELTS score, taken after March 31, 2006, of at least 6.5 if applying for a graduate degree in the natural sciences, math, medicine or engineering, and 7.0 if applying for a degree in any other field.

  4. Applicants must be accepted in a graduate degree program at an accredited, English-speaking university or research institution abroad by April 10, 2008 for the 2008-2009 academic year.

  5. Applicants who have studied abroad at the college level in an English-speaking institution for more than a total of two (2) academic years are ineligible.

  6. Holders of scholarships greater than ¥1.0 million from any other scholarship foundation or from company scholarship programs (kigyo ryugaku) are ineligible. Financial aid and awards from the university where the applicant will study are excepted from this limitation.
