VI and CWAJ volunteers enjoying the 2009 Show

Hands-on Art (HOA) was first launched in 1996 with the idea of offering opportunities for people with visual impairments to enjoy prints exhibited in the 41st CWAJ Print Show. This year four prints were chosen and made into tactile prints called “raised images” by using a special kind of paper. The raised images were created by CWAJ volunteers under the guidance of the Japan Braille Library. By creating the raised images the visitors can feel the concepts in four prints by INOUE Atsushi, NISHIMURA Fumiko, TSUBOUCHI Yoshiko, and YAMAMOTO Keisuke. Explanations given by our guides help expand visitors’ imagination so they can appreciate the art more. Although the number of raised images is limited, the visitors can enjoy many of the prints with our guides, particularly when the artist himself is present. Some visitors say that listening to the artist’s talk about their work is often inspirational and the experience becomes deeper and more personal.

“Every piece had its own philosophy and the Braille text explanation was a great help in understanding the print. Living in the middle of a city, I sometimes long for nature. I feel that my heart is being healed as I imagine the scene of the print.”

“It is a precious time and a great pleasure for me to enjoy art, a real treat that I do not always have. To come to the Print Show is something I look forward to every year.”
