CWAJ EDUCATION
PROGRAMS
CWAJ has built an excellent reputation for supplying English language
services to a wide cross section of the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Support for foreign students, school children and the disabled are
available through the efforts of three dedicated subgroups of CWAJ
multicultural members.
The
Children’s English Circle:
the original after-school program in Tokyo for returning Japanese
children who wish to maintain their English language skills after living
in an English speaking country. The CEC program, which meets three
afternoons a month, blends learning with play through reading aloud,
singing, reciting poetry, and other interactive activities.
The Foreign Students' Circle:
monthly educational and cultural
program for foreign university students studying in Japan as
undergraduates, graduates, exchange or research students. Each
student is assigned a CWAJ volunteer who acts as a mentor during the
term. The FSC serves to introduce students of many nationalities to each
other as well as to the intricacies of Japanese culture.
The
Volunteers for Visually Impaired:
Throughout the
year, VVI gives needed English language support to the visually impaired
community in the Tokyo area through the following programs:
l
English Conversation class at the
Japan Vocational Development Center for the Blind, held on Thursday
afternoons. Pairs of volunteers teach practical English in a fun,
relaxed atmosphere as part of a one-year vocational course for adults
with visual impairments.
To find out more about this program, pair up as an
assistant to the regular volunteer teacher to see firsthand if you’d
like to take part on a more regular basis
l
English Conversation Gatherings
are social gatherings for visually impaired students and adults to
practice their English skills with the multicultural members of CWAJ in
friendly, relaxed forum. Held quarterly on a Friday evening or weekend
afternoon, all CWAJ members are welcome to take part.
l
At
Tsukuba High School for the Blind,
VVI volunteers help students prepare for the interview section of EIKEN
English language proficiency tests upon request of the school. Let us
know if you’d like to help.
No previous
experience with the disabled is necessary to take part in any of the VVI
programs. VVI warmly welcomes any CWAJ member. Please contact
coordinators for more information.
