Kunio Kobayashi, Bonsai artist
A Demonstration and Talk about Bonsai
The New Year begins with a program about the traditional Japanese
art of Bonsai. Kunio Kobayashi, Bonsai master artist and director of
the Shunkaen Bonsai Museum, will give a live demonstration of
creating bonsai while telling us all about this uniquely Japanese
horticultural art. Bonsai is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and
developing them into an aesthetically appealing shape by growing,
pruning and training them in containers according to prescribed
techniques. In Japan, many consider this a hobby for seniors but in
foreign countries, Bonsai is enjoying a surge in popularity. Mr.
Kobayashi has a constant flow of visitors from all around the world
to his Bonsai school and museum in Edogawa Ward. He also travels
extensively overseas giving talks and workshops on Bonsai as he
“wants to show both the beauty and severity of nature that is hidden
within Bonsai, even if just a little glimpse, to a great number of
people around the world.”

Mr. Kobayashi has been
practicing bonsai for more than thirty years, and
has received numerous awards both for his bonsai and
contribution to promoting Japanese culture. He is a
four-time winner of the Prime Minister's Award given
annually at Sakufuten, Japan's premier professional
bonsai exhibition and has also been awarded the
International Art and Culture Award by the Japanese
Culture Promotion Association. He has appeared
frequently on Japanese TV – currently he can be seen
Saturday evenings on BSFuji. He is the author of
‘BONSAI,’ with text in both Japanese and English
translation, and he has also been featured in
numerous magazines.
