In January in Japan we celebrate the beginning of a New Year. We wait with great anticipation for the first day of the year and with curiosity for the first dream of the New Year. Beginnings are fresh and new. All things feel possible again. In celebration of that feeling we bring you a very special first for our January luncheon – the first foreign woman to be accepted as a full-fledged Geisha. Following in a 400 year old tradition, Sayuki joined the ranks of roughly 2000 women working as Geisha in Japan today on December 19, 2007. On that day she visited 100 different tea places in the Asakusa area to introduce herself. That was truly a new beginning! Sayuki first came to Japan at the age of 15 from her native Australia. Intrigued with the culture, she extended her stay and graduated from high school and university here after being accepted as the first western woman to be admitted full time as a Keio University student. Following that she went on to earn an MBA from Oxford and later became a social anthropologist specializing in Japanese culture. As such she needed to truly experience what she was studying and so decided to embark on her training as a geisha. If you’ve ever wondered what Geisha truly do, this is your chance to find out! We’ll learn about the training involved, the requirements for success in this demanding profession, and what the daily life of a typical Geisha entails.
