MONTHLY LUNCHEON March Luncheon Program Virginia Anami
|
||||||||||||
| In the year 838 during the Tang Dynasty an ambassadorial mission from Japan set out for China. Accompanying this mission was a Japanese monk named Ennin who was charged with finding the answers to certain theological questions posed by his order. He ended up spending a total of 9 years traveling through China and during this time he kept a detailed diary. This diary has preserved a fascinating look into the Chinese daily life of the period. |

| Our speaker in March, Virginia Anami who currently teaches Chinese history at Temple University in Tokyo, has held a long fascination with Ennin’s diary since discovering it as a young scholar. Over the past 25 years she has lived in China | |

for three separate postings with her husband, a career diplomat and recent Japanese Ambassador to China. During that time she was able to re-trace Ennin’s entire journey from the back roads and waterways he traveled to the small villages and stunning mountains he encountered. In 2007 she published her own book, Following the Tracks of Ennin’s 9th Century Journey. |
| Ms. Anami holds a BA in East Asian Studies from Scripps College in California as well as an MA in East Asian Studies, with a specialty in history and geography, from the East West Center at the University of Hawaii. | |
|
In addition to her recent book she has published two
other books on China and her writing has appeared in
numerous newspapers and magazines. Come join us in March for our own journey in Ennin’s footsteps as Virginia Anami retraces his route for us, illuminated by modern day photographs of the many places he visited some 1200 years ago. Don’t miss this special look at a China not easily seen in the news or on a packaged tour! |
