MONTHLY LUNCHEON

February Luncheon Program

             Allan West

Traditional Japanese Painter

In February we are excited to have Allan West as our speaker. Mr. West is an American who came to Japan in 1982. He holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in the United States and an MFA from Tokyo University of Fine Arts where he studied under Kayama Matazo – “one of the five ‘reigning mountains’ of traditional Japanese painting. “ He has gone on to establish himself as an internationally renowned painter within the Japanese tradition. In recognition of this he was recently referred to by a Japanese art historian as the last remaining painter of the Kano School of Painting in Japan which dates back to the 1500’s. luncheon 1

His work has been shown around the world in over 20 museums and 40 galleries including the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C., the Shuvalovsky Museum in St. Petersburg, the Lu Xun Museum’s special exhibition in Shanghai, and the  Daigoji Reihokan Museum, the foremost museum of Japanese National Treasures.

H   His art has been commissioned as a backdrop for Noh and Kabuki plays as well as for the music of National Living Treasures at the National Theatre.

Recently he designed the tenugui, a rectangular cotton cloth, used onstage this past October by the well known Kabuki actor Tamasaburo.  He is currently under commission to paint the fusuma, the sliding paper doors, of the Daigoji Temple in Kyoto. In addition he also does a significant amount of commissioned work for individuals and enjoys the collaborative process involved in creating something unique and pleasing for each private collector.

Come join us for a special afternoon with Allan West as we hear about his work, his career, his process as an artist and more!
